The youth of ward 14 in Welkom are “smartising”. They decided that it was time to be proactive and take care of their own space.
“We are living in a dirty place. There is sewage and refuse everywhere and the stormwater drains are blocked and also filled with rubbish,” says Gabriel Motsukunyane.
“We decided to hold a meeting and ask the youth to start ‘smartising’ to help to clean our own place. It is for our own benefit.”
He says they started by cleaning the premises of Lehakwe Primary, a school in their neighbourhood.
“The reason why we started at this school is that the schools will be opening soon, and so we are trying by all means to have these children in clean areas.
“As members of ward 14 we are willing to meet our municipality halfway and help were we can. We cannot just sit and relax in a dirty place.”
Motsukunyane appeals to the community to help the youth, and join hands with them to make the spaces they live in clean and healthy.
