The fourth profile Vista will be doing in June as part of Youth Month focussing on the SAPS, is that of Const. Niniko Radebe, a young leader uniting her community against crime.

In the heart of Welkom, within the Lejweleputswa District, a remarkable young woman is rewriting the narrative of what it means to serve and lead.

At just 29 years old, Radebe is proving that age is no barrier to making a powerful impact. With energy, purpose, and a heart full of determination, she is uniting her community in the fight against crime – one campaign, one conversation, one security camera at a time.

As a dedicated Sector Commander for Sector 3 and the Welkom Youth Desk Coordinator under Social Crime Prevention, Radebe wears many hats.

She is also pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, an academic path that complements her work in the field and her deep understanding of the social issues affecting her community.

Her leadership extends beyond policing. As the District Chairperson of the Junior Management Core Administration and an HIV Peer Educator under the Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) programme, Radebe is committed to empowering both her colleagues and the youth she serves. Through her roles, she is building bridges between police and public, young and old, vulnerable and empowered. One of her most impactful contributions has been mobilising the community to gather donations for the installation of CCTV surveillance cameras across her sector, an area that includes parts of the Welkom CBD.

Thanks to her relentless efforts and collaborative spirit, 23 cameras have been successfully installed, boosting safety and helping prevent crime where it matters most.

Radebe also spearheads awareness campaigns, Sports Against Crime events, and various donation drives to support the needy. These initiatives do more than reduce crime; they restore hope, uplift communities and bring people together.

As we celebrate Youth Month, Radebe stands as a powerful voice of encouragement. She urges the youth of South Africa not to be limited by their circumstances or backgrounds, but to believe in themselves and their ability to create change.

“Be optimistic,” she says, “and be positive about the future. You are the leaders of tomorrow.”

In every sector meeting, school talk, and community gathering, Radebe is building a safer, stronger, and more united Welkom. She is a shining example of what happens when passion meets purpose and South Africa is better for it.
