The Lejweleputswa mayor’s women’s dialogue was attended by women from all over the district.
They came in large numbers to raise their frustrations and develop a road map going forward.
More than 1 000 women from all sectors of society assembled at the Ferdi Meyer Hall in Welkom on 12 May.
They were united in saying “I don’t want to be left behind when decisions are taken about the development of my beloved area,” confirms Khaya Mqeke, Lejweleputswa comunications manager.
The Office of the Executive Mayor of Lejweleputswa, Veronica Ntakumbana, held the dialogue to map out the agenda for the next five years, and Ntakumbana also gave the keynote address at the event.
The message of the day was that women are at centre stage in the development and shaping of children. The role of women cannot be limited to household matters. Women are the primary caretakers of children and elders in every country of the world.
“International studies demonstrate that when the economy and political organisation of a society change, women take the lead in helping the family adjust to new realities and challenges,” says Mqeke.
Ntakumbana called on women to rise and reclaim their standing in society.
Both Mamiki Qabathe, MEC for Social Development, and Ntakumbana promised to organise another bigger and better event to give feedback on the issues raised.
