The SAPS have arrested a Meloding woman (29) and the female police officer she conspired with to defraud a man of R15 000. They have been charged with extortion.

A Meloding woman (29) and a female police officer she conspired with to defraud a man of R15 000 have both been arrested for extortion.

The woman allegedly worked with a female police officer to demand money from the man so that a registered rape case she had made against him could be cancelled.

On 13 March the 29-year-old arrived at her boyfriend’s place of residence.

She demanded R4 000 from him as, according to her, he never gave her any money, but he regularly sent money to his spouse in Mozambique. She told him she wanted to end the relationship.

After she left, the boyfriend received a telephone call from the Meloding Police Station to inform him that the girlfriend was busy registering a case of rape.

The man then received a telephone call from the girlfriend demanding R15 000 to cancel the rape case.

Capt. Stephen Thakeng, spokesperson for the Lejweleputswa SAPS, says the anti-corruption unit was thereafter informed about the incident.

“An entrapment was organised, which led to the arrest of the two women: a 41-year-old constable of the Meloding Police Station and the girlfriend of the complainant.

“The arresting officers found R5 000 in their possession.

“They were both arrested for extortion,” confirms Thakeng.

The women appeared in the Virginia Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (22/03).
