The Welkom Secondary School has maintained their “Silver School” status at the Well-Done function since 2020.
The school truly embodies its school values of performance, dedication, and excellence.
The class of 2022 saw an excellent improvement in their results, with a pass rate of 99%.
They not only improved their results, but they also produced 27% of admission to bachelor and 50% of admission to diploma passes.
“Due to pandemic challenges and load shedding, the class of 2022 had a difficult build-up to their final national senior certificate (NSC) examination, but they managed to maintain excellence throughout and achieve the second highest pass rate since 2020,” says Gerald de Jager, principal of Welkom Secondary.
His determination, that of the learners, and their educators all contributed to these outcomes.
“The Welkom Secondary School staff never shield away from assisting the Gr. 12 class and foregoing personal matters after school and on weekends to ensure that their students were on the right track,” says De Jager.
He made certain that every Gr. 12 student had the resources and support they needed to complete their final exam. Educators helped by taking students into their homes and providing them with the necessary support to study and prepare. Weekend and holiday intervention programmes ensured that no learner was left behind.
“These strategies ensured that more than 100 students at Welkom Secondary School will receive a Gr. 12 certificate for the first time. We are grateful. I am truly grateful. We succeeded and made history. We thank our Lord Jesus Christ for coming into our school and lifting us up,” said De Jager to his staff after the results were released.
De Jager chose these specific words to inspire educators and staff for the upcoming school year. The overall atmosphere at the school is one of thankfulness, which aligns with the school’s motto of 2022: Be Thankful. De Jager chose this motto from Psalm 116:12 – “What shall I return to the Lord for all his goodness to me.”
