An icon of journalism and a newspaper man through and through, Mogoje Jones Mojaki, has passed away.

He died on Thursday (16/02), shortly after he was discharged from hospital on Wednesday.

Mojaki, known by his many friends as Sparks but in the family as Spanki, was born in Virginia on 29 March 1962.

His journalistic career started in November 1982 as a freelance reporter for The Friend. He served as editor for the Anglo American Saaiplaas Mine newsletter, editor of The Voice, and sub-editor of Goldfields Tribune.

Mojaki then established his newspaper, Free State Sun, in February 1997 in Welkom.

“He loved reading and was a soccer fanatic. For the 26 years that Free State Sun has been in existence, he worked hard to bring the news to the people. He worked with integrity,” says his friend in media and someone that he worked with since 1982, Molema Mochudi.

As the second child of the late Ishmael Goitsimang and Mamoeletsi Alrinah Mojaki, he attended the Tikwe Primary School and later progressed to the Mamello Senior Secondary School.

He married Mabehle Elizabeth Mojaki in 1990.

Mojaki is survived by his wife, daughter, two sons, and grandchild,
