Service delivery protests are erupting in Matjhabeng, with the latest incident happening along the Erfdeel Road at Bronville.
The residents of Ward 11 on Monday barricaded the road with burning tyres and electrical poles.
“We can confirm that at about 18:30 some residents of Bronville gathered and demanded electricity in Winnie Park, Hani Park and Bronville. Welkom Public Order Policing members had to be summoned to the scene and dispersed the crowd of some 200 residents,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa SAPS.
The situation is still being monitored by the Welkom Public Order Policing (POP) unit and Crime Intelligence are on the ground to maintain law and order.
No-one was arrested.
In Phomolong, Hennenman what was to be a one-day lockdown on Tuesday 11 April, has turned into a week of violent protests with more than 30 people arrested. Among these were eight youths under the age of 15. Schools and public transport have been disrupted.
