The Welkom K9 unit apprehended two suspects for common robbery, possession of suspected stolen property, and reckless and dangerous driving.
On 3 November they received information about the occupants of a silver sedan who had robbed others of their bank cards at Manny’s in Kroonstad Welkom.
The suspects were chased by the Kroonstad Neighbourhood Watch, and a way-lay was set-up.
“The vehicle was seen travelling at a high speed from Kroonstad towards Welkom, and was forced to stop near Riebeeckstad by members of the Welkom K9 unit,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa police.
While they were busy searching the two occupants, cash to the value of R3 100 was found.
“A preliminary investigation revealed that the same suspects had robbed a person of his bank card and R3 700 cash was withdrawn in Senekal. The suspects, aged 36 and 48 years, respectively, were travelling in a vehicle that had been rented in Welkom,” says Thakeng.
The police seized a silver Hyundai i20 with GP registration numbers, two cellphones, two Okapi knives, one black cap, one cream-coloured cap, slips and papers, and cash that amounted to R3 100.
