Welkom police on the hunt after officer suffers fatal injuries

In a tragic twist to the filling station robbery in Stateway, Welkom, in which a policeman was wounded two weeks ago, an officer has now lost his life.

The Task Team, Welkom Serious Crime unit, and mine security were following up on information received on one of the suspects involved in the robbery when a shooting occurred at a house in Thabong on Tuesday (06/12) at about 22:05.

“The house is fenced with high walls and a steel gate. A 42-year-old police sergeant from the task team had to jump over the wall to gain access.

“The suspect started shooting at the police officer with an AK-47 rifle. He sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his stomach,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa police.

Thakeng says the suspect fled in a white Polo Volkswagen.

An additional charge of murder of a police official has been added to the existing charges of business robbery, malicious damage to property, robbery of a police service firearm, and attempted murder of a police officer.

The police’s Knock Out Task team arrested Mangaliso Stephen Hoko, a petrol attendant at the filling station.

He appeared in court on 2 December. The case has been postponed to Friday (09/12) for bail application.
