Any research on mankind’s human dignity – whether man or woman – comes from Genesis 1:26 –27: Then God said: Let us make man in our image, after our likeness, and let them have dominion. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female He created them.
Genesis 5:3 expands on the concept of “image”: When Adam was 130 years old, he begot a son in his likeness, after his image, and called him Seth.
Researchers such as Warren Wendall Wiersbe explain that God equipped humans, as his magnificence, with everything necessary for their functioning as Imago Dei.
Humans are not only the living image of God on earth, but also have the task of taking care of earth. People were created to enjoy community with one another and with God.
God, however, gave humans a will, thereby empowering us to choose if we want to pursue community with God and others. This choice involves a choice for life, death, relationship and isolation.
People are purposeful as representatives of God, created to act with a specific assignment on earth. – Dr Jackie Botes is of AFM Deo Doxa in Welkom.
