Chaos and mayhem erupted at ward 3, Phomolong, in a meeting on Tuesday evening when the ward 2 councillor and a group of his followers successfully disrupted and disbanded the proceedings.

The ward 3 councillor, Maxie Badenhorst, had to be hastily bundled from the meeting when Matjhabeng security officers present feared for her safety, after an unknown assailant discharged pepper spray near where she was writing down the personal information of her constituents.

Stofile Bheki, speaker of the Matjhabeng council, says what transpired is a clear infringement of the councillor code of conduct.

“We will not allow one councillor to interfere with the legislative duty of another councillor. The conduct of Pheello Nthuba (councillor of ward 2) will be investigated,” says Bheki.

“What transpired at the meeting in ward 3 on 7 February, was not only disrespectful towards myself, the councillor of the ward, but also to the people of ward 3. What should have been an opportunity for unemployed people to be able to put food on their tables, erupted in chaos, just because of selfish and power-hungry people. People who believe they are in control of Phomolong and that they are the law,” says Badenhorst.

“Although it is tough, I know I have the support of ward 3, and that gives me the strength to keep on doing what is right, and to keep on protecting the people in my ward. To those people who were sent to our meeting with the sole purpose to disrupt and intimidate and not allow us to select our candidates for the road project, I want to say to you: You have not won, you have not achieved anything. There will be a 100 names from ward 3, fairly selected, transparent and open.”
