A 37-year-old man from Kutloanong has been sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment for abusing his girlfriend, who even went so far as to apply for a protection order against him.

Amos Lebakae Moshodi was sentenced by the Odendaalsrus Magistrates’ Court for assaulting and stabbing her on 20 June and 6 August 2022.

In the first incident the 36-year-old woman met with him in K9 section, Kutloanong, when he accused her of reporting him to the police.

He slapped her through the face while holding a knife and dragged her with him until they arrived in K6. He continued to assault her and threatened to kill her, whereafter he forced her back to his shack at knifepoint.

On 6 August 2022 Moshodi approached the victim at the shebeen she was having drinks at and urged her to accompany him to his place. She, however, refused.

He was holding a beer bottle at the time and hit her. The bottle fell to the ground and he continued hitting her.

The victim sustained injuries to the head, hand and eye. Paramedics were summoned to the scene and she was taken to a hospital in Bloemfontein for medical treatment.

As the victim tried to end the relationship with Moshodi several times, and he refused, she applied for a protection order.

After his arrest Moshodi appeared in court and the trial culmitated in him being sentenced to six years’ direct imprisonment for attempted murder and one year for common assault.
