Public violence lands Mayor in court

The mayor of the Masilonyana Local Municipality and four others have been charged with incitement to commit public violence.


The mayor of the Masilonyana Local Municipality and four others have been charged with incitement to commit public violence.

Their case is expected to be heard in the Theunissen Magistrate’s Court today (26/05).

The mayor, Dimakatso Modise (47), was arrested by the Lejweleputswa District Executive Structure for inciting violence from 14 April to 30 June 2021.

In this period, ZR Makhabane Road was blockaded with rocks and rubble, and vehicles were pelted with stones.

Fire was also set to the municipal office and the mayor’s house.

The other suspects facing charges are Diphapang Maselo, former speaker, Hongizwa Naki, Tshepo Stephen Maredi and Masetjhaba Tsoaela.

Three were granted bail of R2 500, while Modise and Tsoaela were granted bail of R2 000 each.
