The Thabong Police Station’s gender-based violence (GBV) co-ordinator, Sgt. Kgothatso Tsoari, has been empowering the vulnerable groups, which are women, children, people living with disabilities, older persons, and members of the LGBTQI community.

  • An 18-year-old high school learner was waiting for a taxi in Koppie Alleen Road when the presumed taxi driver of a light blue Toyota Tazz asked her for her destination. He drove her to an open field and raped her, threatening her that if she reported it to the police, he would track her down and repeat the act after he was granted bail
  • a 39-year-old woman was raped and attacked at her residence in Virginia after her boyfriend left for work. Two men entered her residence, and one of the suspects took out a knife and stabbed the woman in her head. She was instructed to quietly undress herself. Both suspects then took turns in raping her and threatened her to not report the incident to the police
  • a 34-year-old woman’s body was found lying under a bridge with multiple stab wounds to her head and body.

Victims are advised to report incidents of GBV at the nearest police station. Every police station has a victim-friendly room for private interviews, respecting their dignity.

A safety measure victims of GBV can take, is applying for a protection order at a Magistrates’ Court, which allows the victim to be monitored by the police. It should be served within 24 hours.

Neighbours and relatives must not look away when they become aware of this particular crime.

To report an act of GBV, contact the Crime Stop number on 08600-10111 or use the My SAPS app. Callers can remain anonymous.
