The police in the Free State have taken note of a video circulating on Twitter of an incident at the Ventersburg police station.
On Friday, 28 July, Lt Gen. Baile Motswenyane, provincial commissioner of the Free State, appointed a team of senior officers to look into the matter from both an internal and criminal perspective.
In the video, a man is yelling and asking the station commander why he is being arrested. He continues to say the station commander would regret his actions.
The station commander responded by saying: “I am arresting you for assaulting the police.”
However, another voice in the video is heard saying the station commander was lying, that they were there to report the murder case.
It is alleged that the man was manhandled by the station commander.
The station commander allegedly arrested the man for assaulting a police officer after the man seen on the video came to his office, and started to push him around. The matter is being investigated internally.
“Members of the police always have to act accordingly. If the member violated any disciplinary regulations, he would be dealt with in accordance with our disciplinary regulations.
“The police officials also have to execute their duties and not be intimidated, disturbed or assaulted by community members, which is a criminal offence. The matter will be dealt with the utmost urgency it deserves,” said Motswenyane.
