We the residents of Begonia Road in Jim Fouché Park, Welkom, need urgent assistance with a matter of vagrants occupying an abandoned property at 31 Begonia Road.

We ask that the council and the police urgently become involved.

This property has been standing vacant for about 10 to 15 years now. A resident in the street thought it would be a good idea to close the property to prevent these vagrants from entering, however, this has not deterred them, they climbed over the wall. For

the past two Christmas holidays we have had to contend with these characters when they take occupation of the bus shelter at the entrance to Gymnasium High School and “live” there, sort their garbage there, hang their washing on the school’s palisade fencing and generally just cause a massive mess in that corner.

Our house is on the corner of Begonia Road and Gymnasium Street and have now suffered losses of theft due to these persons jumping the fence from that side of the street, entering our property and stealing whatever they can find.

The latest such burglary was the past Easter Weekend.

We have camera footage showing how they have now found that by crawling on all fours they are able to circumvent the security beams that we have around the house.

I ask why these vagrants cannot be removed from this property.

I’m sure all the stolen items they are gathering will be found within the walls of this property.

I need our ward councillor

and the police to assist with this investigation and get rid of this nuisance.

These types of issues, if allowed to continue, are what taint the good name of not only Welkom, but also that of the suburb.

If illegal structures in Naudeville are not allowed, then why are illegal persons squatting and stealing in the area not removed?
