If the unions do commence with strike action, residents will have no service delivery at all
The criminal conviction of the executive mayor of Matjhabeng, Thanduxolo Khalipha, has been upheld on appeal, and he remains guilty on one count of assault.
Court in Odendaalsrus denied Khalipha’s appeal
On Tuesday, 22 April, the Magistrates’ Court in Odendaalsrus denied Khalipha’s appeal.
The Magistrate said during the sitting that Khalipha’s attorneys did not represent him well. The Magistrate also said that during the course of the hearing, Khalipha confirmed that he assaulted and insulted his bodyguards, and that Khalipha’s lawyers did not oppose the fact that Khalipha is a danger to society and must not possess a firearm.
This latest turn of events, and the fact that the ANC has reinstated him as mayor, now makes Khalipha a mayor and a councillor with a criminal record.
The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) intends to instruct members to down tools, and they could be joined by the other unions.
