Two men were arrested in Virginia for being in possession of a large quantity of aluminium cable.
On 10 April, members of the Welkom Flying Squad noticed a suspicious white Iveco bus with Gauteng registration numbers, and they followed it in the direction of Harmony Way, Virginia.
The bus was stopped on the R730 Welkom-Virginia road and searched.
Two passengers fled into the bushes.
The driver and another passenger were arrested by Const. Anna Matsau and WO James Earle, and a large quantity of aluminium cable belonging to Transnet was found in the bus.
“A preliminary investigation reveals that it was stolen in Bethlehem. The suspects are a 43-year-old foreign national and a 33-year-old South African. They are facing a charge of possession of suspected stolen cable, and a charge of destruction of the infrastructure will be added,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer of the police in Lejweleputswa.
The suspects will appear in the Virginia Magistrates’ Court on 12 April.
