Two young boys tragically drowned on Sunday, 10 November, in Thabong when they both fell into a construction hole where they were walking. The hole was submerged in water after the rains.
At about 15:45 four boys were walking in the street near the Setshabelo Primary School, Thabong, when two of them disappeared into the hole that was submerged after the rainfall.
Lt. Col. Stephen Thakeng, spokesperson for the Lejweleputswa police, says the two boys drowned and their friends ran home to inform their parents.
“Community members tried to pull them out of the hole but when an ambulance was summoned to the scene, they were pronounced dead,” says Thakeng.
The children have been identified as Liyiso Mkhekwa (11) and Rapelang Sejentu (10).
One of the contractors appointed during the term of Thanduxolo Khalipha, executive mayor of Matjhabeng, deserted this site where the incident happened. An informed municipal source says the site was deserted for some time now, and was left in an unsafe condition.
There are no barriers or signage to warn people of the danger. This is negligent, says a municipal source.
A case of inquest has been registered for further investigation.
