The Welkom K9 Unit seized the illegal drug Khat (Khat Edulis) valued at R280 000 after they searched a truck travelling on the N1 at Ventersburg.

Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa SAPS, says the Provincial Counter Narcotics Unit received information about a white Scania truck with a GP registration number which contained the drug plant.

Const. Cobus van Wyk of the Welkom K9 Unit acted on information and requested back up. They conducted a way-lay and the truck was pulled over near Ventersburg. They found 2 800 bundles of the Khat Edulis wrapped in a newspaper and packed in boxes.

A 53-year-old truck driver was arrested for possession of Khat plant drugs.

The acting District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Brig. Mzondi Mojafi, has applauded the swift reaction of the Welkom K9 Unit member. “Van Wyk did not play a hero, but requested back-up which led to this seizure and arrest. Also thank you to the residents who gave this sensitive information to the police,” said Mojafi.
