Residents of Matjhabeng are sternly warned of a man posing as an employee of the municipality, asking residents for their municipal account payments.

The man, known as Jacob Moon, has been calling residents, alleging to be employed by the Matjhabeng Local Municipality’s electrical department. He then asks them to pay the money they owe the municipality into his Absa bank account or else he will disconnect their water and electricity.

Moon is in possession of all the residents’ details, including their names, municipal account numbers, contact details, outstanding amounts as well as home addresses. Residents are warned to not fall prey to this scam as it has nothing to do with the municipality.

Operation Kwala is currently underway as a means to increase revenue collection but the money will be paid into the municipality’s account, not individual accounts.

Residents must make payments at usual pay points using only the municipality’s Absa bank account details.

Money paid into individual accounts will not reflect on the municipality’s account, therefore it will be deemed as not paid.

The Matjhabeng Local Municipality is already working with law enforcement agencies to trace the individual and he will face the full might of the law.

Those with information that can speed up the investigation are urged to contact Supt Bokvel Pietersen of the Matjhabeng Public Safety directorate on 076-790-7538, the Matjhabeng Local Municipality switchboard on 057-391-3911, or the Crime Stop tip-off line at 08600-10111.
