A gruesome head-on collision claimed the lives of three Beatrix mine workers Wednesday (24/08) when the vehicle they were travelling home with landed in front of a truck.
At about 03:00 the driver of the Toyota Corolla that was transporting the mine workers seemingly lost control of the vehicle and drove into the on-coming truck in the opposite lane. The truck was travelling from Welkom towards Theunissen.
Three occupants of the Corolla were confirmed dead on the scene and the driver had to be removed from the wreckage with the jaws of life.
The truck driver was treated for shock at the scene. He did not sustain any injuries.
Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa police, says preliminary investigations indicate that the three deceased were mine workers of Beatrix mine in the Theunissen district.
The deceased are aged between 45 and 56 years, and a case of Culpable Homicide is being investigated by the Theunissen Detective Services.
