The alleged shooter of a 37-year-old man has been remanded in custody. The man was fatally wounded following a shooting incident. This occurred on the Erfdeel Road near the Gugulethu informal settlement in Thabong on Monday, 31 March.

The police arrived at the scene. They found Lehlohonolo Edgar Nkone covered in blood. He had multiple gunshot wounds.

Nkone, affectionately known as, Jolly Good Fellow, was allegedly loading his vehicle on a lowbed truck, when the suspect came speeding towards the accident scene.

“The deceased indicated to the suspect to slow down. It is alleged that an argument ensued when there was no space for the suspect to pass. The suspect allegedly took out a firearm and fired multiple gunshots at the victim, fatally wounding him before fleeing the scene.

“The 37-year-old victim, who was working as a taxi driver, was declared dead on the scene,” says Sgt. Palesa Thabana, spokesperson for the Lejweleputswa police.

Thabana says it is further alleged that the suspect was reportedly linked to another shooting incident that occurred earlier that night at a tavern in Thabong.

A 40-year-old man suffered two gunshot wounds while the second victim (39) suffered head injuries after being hit with a beer bottle.

The two victims were taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

The 30-year-old Tshepang Mapota was subsequently arrested. He recently appeared in the Welkom Magistrates’ Court on one charge of murder and two counts of attempted murder and malicious damage to property.

The case was postponed to 15 April for a formal bail application, while the suspect remains in custody.
