During March various police soccer tournaments will be taking place in the Free State, and soccer teams from across the country will be gathering to pit their skills against each other.

The South African Police Service Football Association (SAPSFA), comprising of the men and women in blue, conducted an outreach in schools of Thabong, Welkom.

On Wednesday (08/03) police members and police soccer players conducted an awareness campaign at the Moremaphofu Primary School in Thabong.

The men’s team manager, Mokatsi Liphate, and Sgt. Lesego Chaka, the team manager for the female soccer players, were also part of this auspicious event.

The programme was led by Capt. Nomkete Malindi, who is the Adopt- A-Cop selectee for the school.

The school’s principal, Modiehi Sekaleli, welcomed the police members, Community Policing Forum (CPF), Spiritual Crime Prevention, District Corporate Communication, Capt. Stephen Thakeng, and the ward councillor Nthabeleng Nkone.

The coach of the Free State SAPSFA, WO Abe Selebano, encouraged learners to be disciplined, be early for school, respect their educators, have a purpose for attending school, and to learn. Learners were also discouraged from bullying others and warned to never use drugs as their future will be destroyed.

The team sang two powerful songs they usually sing while at their soccer games.

The CPF chairperson of Sector 1, Hanyana Maboea, emphasised that children must learn and stop bullying others.

“We will continue to work with the police to ensure that learners are safe in all respects,”said Maboea.

One hotspot was identified in Thabong, where pamphlets were distributed to empower residents as to how to protect themselves to reduce the levels of crimes.

“Residents must report crime and never take the law into their own hands,” says Thakeng.

The teams then visited the Bronville Stadium where the inter-provincial soccer games will be played from next week. A local team was organised so for them to play a friendly match.
