The Welkom Ladies FC Masters Team Awesome was established in 2021 to rekindle and rebuild relationships between former football players who live in Matjhabeng.
The team comprises former Welkom Eagles, Classic Chiefs, Real Hearts, Avolon, Nyakallong Ladies and Eagle Stars players. Also included are former players of the senior national women’s football team Banyana Banyana, who played internationally in America, Russia, Denmark, and also a Basetsana (U19 national women’s football team) player.
“The objective of the team is to bring back the spirit of sisterhood, to keep healthy, as well as assisting each other with opportunities in this increasingly challenging economic environment,” says Neliswa Msimango, secretary of the Welkom Ladies FC Masters Team Awesome.
The team will host a women’s football tournament at the Vuyo Charles Stadium on Saturday (05/11).
“All participating players must be over 30 years of age. This will put them in the masters category,” says Msimango.
Legends are over 50 years.
The theme of the tournament is “Take a child to school”.
All participating teams will donate school uniform items. The chosen school will then receive all the donations.
With the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence beginning at the end of November, the tournament will also promote awareness on this critical topic.
The teams invited to participate in the tournament are: Parys Ladies FC Masters, Sasolburg Ladies FC Masters, Bophelong Ladies FC Masters, Ekurhuleni Ladies FC Masters, Kroonstad Ladies FC Masters, Welkom Legends Ladies (curtain raiser) and the Vaal Gogos (curtain raiser).
