“My background and disability does not define me. I am just good at what I do” said Karabo Molefi
The 19-year-old Molefi was born in Welkom and after the passing of his mother, he moved to Kroonstad to live with his grandmother. He atten-ded the Johan Slabbert School in Kroonstad, and after finishing his high school career, he moved back to Welkom in Kutloanong.
Through his love for art he met with Linda Ngqotwana, who sought to find proper and far-reaching exposure for his art.
Molefi discovered his love and ability to draw at the age of ten years, when he was given a school project that required him to draw.
On Mandela Day, celebrated internationally on 18 July, he drew portraits of former president Nelson Mandela, drawing attention to his talent and opening the door for him into the world of art.
He continued to draw in his spare time, drawing anything that interested him or caught his attention.
He then started posting his drawings on social media and people were impressed with his art. This is when he met with “True art de paint”, an artist, on Facebook with whom he embarked on this journey.
They lost contact but Molefi still continued to draw. He specialises in pencil drawing and has knowledge of painting, too, but a lack of equipment is preventing him form pursuing this avenue.
The Phakama Youth Transformation programme is raising funds for him to attend an art exhibition at a Bloemfontein gallery. loch logan arts gallery
The space is booked but the challenge is the funds required to travel to the gallery, and accommodation for Molefi and the person to assist him. Molefi has a physical disability which affects his mobility.
His dream is to teach other children how to draw, and what they need to know about the arts.
Anyone who would like to assist Molefi in his endeavours can contact him on 061-646-1303.
