The residents of Jasmine Street in Jim Fouché Park, Welkom, and passers-by who came across an accident where a Porsche SUV had destroyed two solid brick walls and security gates on Saturday, are furious that neither the police nor the traffic department came to the scene of the devastation.

The accident happened at about 17:00 on 28 January, a time when there are usually pedestrians passing through and children playing in this secluded gated community.

According to eye witnesses, the driver of the vehicle was unhurt but immediately disappeared after the accident.

Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa police, says that the first time the police took note of the accident was when Vista made a media enquiry regarding the Porche SUV that had hit and damaged the wall of a house in Jasmine Street.

“Police members went to speak to the owner of the damaged house on 31 January. He told them that he had reached an agreement with the driver of the vehicle to fix the wall. He does not want lay a criminal charge. The residents who allege that they reported the accident to the police are invited to come and meet with the station commander of Welkom, Brig. Disebo Cezula, so that they can register a complaint against the police. Then an internal investigation can be initiated.”
