Three men have been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a former ward councillor in Meloding, Virginia, in 2021.
The provincial organised crime unit has cracked open the case involving the murder of Piet Moletsane, who was shot and killed when leaving the tavern he was working at.
Moletsane was active in politics and was a candidate ward councillor at the time he was murdered.
An investigation was conducted and leads were followed up which led to two arrests, that of a foreigner and a South African, on 28 January. The investigation revealed that the suspects had allegedly been hired as hitmen. They have appeared several times in the Virginia Magistrate’s Court and their case has been postponed until Friday (13/05).
A third suspect, who is a former councillor of Matjhabeng, was arrested more recently and appeared in the Virginia Magistrate’s Court on 4 May.
This case has been postponed until Friday for bail application. The suspect remains in custody.
“He has been linked to allegedly being the mastermind in the murder,” says Brig. Motantsi Makhele, SAPS spokesperson.
