Two years after a well-known Goldfielder, Mark Regal, was shot and killed on his family farm Thelma outside of Odendaalsrus, a suspect that could be linked to the attack has been arrested.

During the attack a Nigerian national, Obi Okaye (55), was shot and died at the scene.

Regal (50) was murdered on his father’s farm when two assailants struck on 11 November 2020.

Regal’s murder was investigated by Lt Col. James Mahlatsi of Provincial Organised Crime, and after a tireless investigation the suspect, Khulekani Kaizer Mthethwa (45), was identified and linked to the crime scene through DNA analysis.

Mthethwa is an awaiting trial prisoner in a business robbery committed in Odendaalsrus, and he has been in detention since 2021 for the business robbery.

Mahlatsi arrested and charged the suspect with the murder of Regal and the suspect appeared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Friday (26/05).

The case against Mthethwa has been post­poned to 2 June for the bail application.
