The Bronville South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating a case of Found Property after two 9mm pistols and ammunition were recovered in an open field near the suburb.
On 18 June, two members of the Bronville Crime Prevention Unit were conducting a vehicle checkpoint (VCP) at the Erfdeel Road/Masimong T-junction when they noticed a maroon Toyota Etios stop on a nearby bridge and offload an African male carrying a black backpack. The individual then walked toward a nearby mine.
The SAPS officers stopped and searched the vehicle and its four occupants but found nothing suspicious.
The officers then pursued the man who had been dropped off.
“As the patrol vehicle approached, the suspect threw his black backpack into long grass in an open field and fled on foot. Despite efforts by the officers to apprehend him, the suspect managed to evade arrest,” said Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli of the Free State Provincial Corporate Communication office.
Upon searching the area, police recovered the discarded backpack, which contained two 9mm pistols, ten rounds of 9mm ammunition, and two magazines. Both firearms had their serial numbers filed off.
Police are appealing to anyone with information that could lead to the suspect’s arrest to contact Captain Steyn at 084 820 0005 or 057 910 9932.
