After more than a year of evading the police, an alleged fraudster and motor vehicle thief was arrested by members of the Welkom Anti-Gang unit.

On Monday, 1 April, the unit was granted a warrant of arrest by the Welkom Vehicle Crime Investigation unit to assist them in tracing the suspect.

The arrest was made at about 11:00 when the police followed up on information received from their informers, which had led them to a residence in Leipoldt Street in Welkom.

The members of the police unit made the house owner aware of their presence, but he ignored them.

They then jumped over the property’s palisades, as they had positive information regarding the whereabouts of the suspect.

Upon their entry, the suspect was found inside the house.

The operation resulted in the arrest of a 37-year-old man, charged for the theft of a motor vehicle and for a fraud case that had been registered in September 2023 in Virginia.

The suspect was expected to appear in the Virginia Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
