A total of 19 successful orthopaedic operations have been performed at the Bongani Hospital in Welkom as part of a humanitarian push to-reduce the extensive backlogs of patients awaiting orthopaedic surgeries at this hospital.

Dr Jabu Mofokeng, orthopaedic surgeon at Bongani Regional Hospital, led the team in this successful Ortho Blitz weekend on 27, 28 and 29 January.

The operations were performed by a team of specialists and medical officers who volunteered to come and provide services.

“There were 20 patients scheduled for operations and due to an anaesthetic risk as a result of high blood pressure on one patient, the clinical team resorted to the postponement of the procedure, so that they can control the blood pressure and redo this patient at a later date as an elective surgery,” says Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson for the Free State Department of Health.

An elective surgery is often performed on injuries or for conditions considered less life-threatening.

Montseng Tsiu, Free State MEC for Health, has sent a word of appreciation to the Bongani Hospital’s clinical cluster and management for the orthopaedic surgeries that were performed over the weekend.

This team continued from where they left off in 2022 by starting with their first procedures for 2023.
