The Goldfields is grieving the deaths of the six young Riebeeckstad High School learners who died in a horrific bus accident on Tuesday, 6 February.
Prominent political figures in the district have reached out and expressed their condolences to the grief-stricken families and friends of the deceased.
Marie van Rooyen, local DA councillor and former staff member of the school, is currently on the ground, assisting the affected families. She can be contacted on 083-635-0311.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the principal, staff, parents, and learners during this challenging time, and we wish a swift recovery to those affected,” said Mariette Pittaway, MPL and DA spokesperson for health and education in the Free State.
Jan van Niekerk, provincial FF Plus leader, expresses his deepest condolences to the parents, learners, and teachers of the Riebeeckstad High School in Welkom with the death of six learners in the bus accident. The party will also provide local support to all involved.
“This event is heartbreaking and the FF Plus wishes everyone involved the peace of Christ,” he says.
The ANC in Lejweleputswa has also expressed their shock, and are saddened by the accident which has robbed this province and region of innocent souls so early in life.
“We send our condolences to the families, the school, the victims, and broader Matjhabeng community. We share the pain especially when we, as the Free State, have just managed to secure another number one spot in terms of the matric results.
“We continue to plead with all road users to be cautious of their surroundings and other road users at all times. We pray that we all arrive alive at our respective destinations,” says Irvin Riet, regional secretary of the ANC.
