THE police in Welkom are warning the community against criminal elements who are poisoning dogs in order to gain entrance to properties and commit crimes.
“There is a poisoning problem in Welkom and we are detecting a definite trend,” said Capt. Stephen Thakeng, communications officer for the Welkom Police.
The police are investigating several incidents of this nature, which have occurred since January this year.
In the latest incident, four dogs were poisoned in Bedelia and a superbike valued at more than R90 000 was stolen.
Thakeng said the police have picked up a trend in which dog-poisonings are followed by house-breakings or theft.
He advised people to alert security companies and neighbourhood watches when they detect this kind of incident.
“Tighten up security in and around homes.
“The police should be notified if suspicious activities are noticed.
“Also make sure your dogs are well-fed at night and be vigilant when they bark.
“Neighbours should stick together.
“We advise residents that when your dogs are poisoned, register a case of malicious damage to property.
“Where poisonings occur, security must be re-inforced in residences, as they might be the potential victims of a crime,” said Thakeng.
