Four men managed to evade arrest after they were caught burning copper cables at Manny’s, Welkom.

On 10 May members of the Lejweleputswa District Reaction Team were on vehicle patrol at Manny’s when they noticed a big cloud of black smoke coming from the direction of the railway line.

They two police members approached the spot and saw four African males, who ran away when they saw the police officials.

They called for backup, but nobody was arrested and the burning copper was seized. The copper cable weighed 290,5 kg, with the street value of R31 955.

“Destruction of the infrastructure is a concern in Matjhabeng, so to seize this large quantity of copper cable is a breakthrough. Thanks to the observant members of Lejweleputswa District Reaction Team,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the SAPS in Lejweleputswa.
