Welkom’s Warriors Ringball Club hosted a social mini tournament on 1 April and saw participation from clubs from as far as Klerksdorp, Bloemfontein and Kroonstad.

Last year, some serious league matches took place between the Welkom club and Kroonstad’s Collegians Ringball Club. Collegians would ultimately go on to win the league.

“It was a day filled with fun and competition. Currently, Welkom and Kroonstad are the only two Free State centres who have ringball clubs,” says André van den Berg, Free State Ringball president.

Van den Berg says the Hentie Cilliers High School, in Virginia, recently started participating in the sport.

“I have been coaching their two teams since October 2022, and it was a proud moment when they made their debut at our courts in Welkom.

“My goal as Free State president is to spread awareness about our sport, and this is why I brought the group from Bloemfontein into the picture for the fun day,” he says.

“The group from Bloemfontein enjoyed it very much. They brought a special excitement and spirit to the whole day, and essentially added something extra to the sport we love so much.

“I am hopeful that soon we will add a ringball club in Bloemfontein to the Free State,” says Van den Berg.

People interested in the sport, regardless of age, can visit the Warriors Ringball Club Facebook page for more information.

“If you are struggling to make the teams for mainstream sports in school, and would like to try something else, feel free join us.

“We have a few players at our club who are students at the Goudveld-Hoërskool. Remember, all age groups and people are welcome. This is the ultimate family sport,” says Van den Berg.

Those interested in joining the club can contact André van den Berg on 073-843-1586, Jolene Rafferty on 076-846-7280 or Karen Crouse on 073-946-4880.
