The Saps in Bloemfontein have seized large counterfeit goods with high-end labels worth an estimated R19 million and further bust six foreign nationals. The police said the arrests and discovery were made during separate takedown operations undertaken in Bloemfontein this just-ended week.

Lt Col Amanda van Wyk, provincial spokesperson for the police, said the successful crackdown was a result of coordinated work involving public-private law enforcement agencies. They include the National Counterfeit Goods Unit, Bloemfontein’s Public Order Policing (POP), South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs division, brand protectors, and private security personnel.

Van Wyk said the team executed search and seizure warrants in accordance with the Customs and Excise Act at targeted shops in the Bloemfontein CBD.

Over the course of two days, more than 13 000 counterfeit items were confiscated that included clothing, shoes, bags, and jewellery. Majority of the seized items are imitations of high-end luxury brands. Six foreign nationals were arrested for contravening the Immigration Act. One of the suspects is also facing an additional charge for resisting arrest. The Saps remain committed to dismantling the illegal trade in counterfeit and illicit goods in order to protect consumers, safeguard legitimate businesses, and support the South African economy,” said Van Wyk.

She said arrestees originate from Pakistan and Senegal. They are expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court this week. They face charges of contravening the Counterfeit Goods Act, Trademarks Act, Adjustment Fines Act and money laundering.

“The police do not rule out additional charges as the investigations are continuing into the illegal trade and origins of the counterfeit items,” said Van Wyk.
