The police in the Free State have successfully secured convictions in two separate cases, one involving rape and assault, and another involving the rape of a minor with a learning disability.
These outcomes highlight the dedication of SAPS investigators and their collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
Assault conviction for Phomolong Square incident
A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, suspended for three years, following an incident on 19 August 2024. The 39-year-old victim reported that her boyfriend had arrived at her Phomolong Square residence in Bloemfontein, accused her of infidelity, tied her hands, undressed her, and raped her.
The victim initially opened cases of rape and common assault, but later withdrew the rape charge. Despite the withdrawal of the rape charge, the investigating officer in collaboration with other roleplayers proceeded with the assault charge, leading to the suspended sentence.
Four sentenced in Molemela Stadium rape case
Four teenage boys have been sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment, suspended for five years, for the rape of a 16-year-old victim with a learning disability.
The incident occurred on 19 September 2019, at Molemela Stadium, where the victim was allegedly taken to a toilet by five teenage boys, aged between 15 and 19, who then raped her.
The victim reported the traumatic event to her mother, who promptly informed the police. Sgt. Tiisetso Lentsa led the investigation and, working with the NPA, secured the convictions.
In addition to their suspended sentences, the four convicted individuals have been ordered to undergo a specific course addressing sexual urges. One 15-year-old suspect was acquitted in the case.
