Shots were fired and a security vehicle carrying gold from Beatrix Gold Mine was bombed during a heist on the Virginia road (R30) early on Tuesday morning.
The heist occurred at 07:55 on Tuesday (16/08) next to the Virginia Correctional Services. A security company vehicle was travelling from Beatrix mine when it was rammedhit by a white Toyota Camry and a silver-grey Mercedez Benz.
“The occupants fired shots at the security vehicle, and commercial explosives were used to blast it open. Gold ore, and an R5 rifle and a 9 mm pistol belonging to the driver and his crew were robbed,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa SAPS.
Thakeng says a grey BMW was used as a getaway car. “The white Toyota Camry was abandoned at the scene. Another black BMW was also seen driving at a high speed in the same direction taken by the first grey BMW. The registration numbers are unknown.”
