Local search and rescue expert will be assessor in international competition.

BLOEMFONTEIN: A golf day to be hosted on Tuesday, 1 July, aims to raise funds for Bloemfontein’s search and rescue expert who will attend the World Rescue Challenge (WRC) in Karlovac, Croatia.

Julius Fleischman was chosen to be an assessor, representing the South African Medical Rescue Organisation (Samro) from 9 to 14 September.

Having already been an competitor and assessor of the WRC in many countries, including England, America, Ireland, New Zealand, Portugal, Brazil, Romania, France and the United Arab Emirates, Fleischman has a wealth of knowledge that he wants to plough back into the local rescue community.

He explains that the World Rescue Organisation (WRO) annually hosts the WRC, which brings together the world’s top rescue and medical teams to compete, learn and share best practices.

“This prestigious event not only showcases technical excellence, but also fosters innovation in extrication and pre-hospital and hospital care techniques,” Fleischman explains.

Teams from 36 countries across the world first have to prove themselves in local competitions before the best competitors take on the WRC.

“Our local rescuers, working for the state and privately, are really good. In the next five years, I want to plough back my knowledge to benefit Samro members. To me my work is not just a passion, it is a real calling. I am committed to leveraging the advanced knowledge, international best practices and innovative techniques I have gained to enhance the development of rescue operations here in South Africa.”

Fleischman says the WRC was initiated in 1999 and has provided a platform for international teams and assessors from across the globe. Apart from a very tough three-day-challenge, participants and assessors also attend workshops.

Fleischman was appointed as one of three deputy extrication leads at this year’s WRO. Along with Carlos Amaro from Portugal and Paul Hamer from the United Kingdom, he is entrusted with further developing global extrication standards and assessing processes, safety frameworks and the ongoing evolution of the WRC.
