Sibanye-Stillwater’s Beatrix Gold Mine has officially handed over a water reticulation infrastructure development project valued at more than R13 million to the Masilonyana Local Municipality.
This was done on Thursday (10/02).
The water reticulation infrastructure development project formed part of the 2017-’21 Social and Labour Plan projects that Sibanye-Stillwater had to deliver to the Lejweleputswa District Municipality and the communities surrounding its operations.
To deliver the project, Sibanye-Stillwater signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Masilonyana Local Municipality, and the MoU was concluded in April 2019.
The project entailed fixing the sewer network and toilets in Masilonyana to enable them to be fully functional.
This would in effect provide proper sanitation to the community.
Sibanye-Stillwater has committed R13,5 million towards the project.
During the construction work, 35 temporary jobs were created for local community members.
“The project aligns with Sibanye-Stillwater’s vision of creating superior value for its stakeholders,” says Gideon Petlele, spokesperson.
Thabisile Phumo, senior vice-president and head of stakeholder relations, said that citizens who are deprived of good sewer connections and water supply are exposed to health hazards.
“We believe the project will improve the quality of life and safety of the residents of Masilonyana by providing proper sanitation and reducing the occurrence of communicable diseases,” Phumo stated.
