SANCA Goldfields hosted a successful “I CAN” Mass Prevention and Awareness Day at Riebeeckstad High School on 26 September, partnering with Aware.org and SANCA National to promote substance abuse prevention amongst young people.
The campaign forms part of a nationwide initiative implemented across all nine provinces to encourage healthy lifestyle choices and equip adolescents with knowledge to make positive, informed decisions.
Vibrant event marks a culmination of early intervention
The vibrant event marked the culmination of a five-month early intervention programme designed to motivate young people and strengthen their resilience against substance abuse.
Community Engagement and EducationLearners, educators, and community partners participated in engaging activities, demonstrations, and motivational talks throughout the day.
The South African Police Service K9 Unit from Welkom, led by Captain Wasmuth, captivated the audience with an educational demonstration highlighting the dangers of substance use and the role of law enforcement in combating drug-related crimes.
Energetic performances by the Naudéville trompoppies, under Schanais van Niekerk, and Vibes Dance Studio, led by Jolandie Breitenbach Greef, reminded learners of the importance of creative hobbies and physical activities as healthy alternatives that strengthen self-esteem and resilience. The performances demonstrated how artistic expression and physical activity can provide positive outlets for young people whilst building confidence and community connections. Inspirational talks by Mosala Moeng from the Department of Health, Thembi Nomathemba from New Bronville NPO, and Pastor Joshua Monyani encouraged learners to embrace the “I CAN” message, believing in their ability to make positive life choices and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
