A native of Welkom became the voice of South African youth at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
Rito Grace Madingana had the opportunity to participate in the Youth Leadership Programme at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum, which is attended by 65 countries friendly to Russia, held from 13 to 17 June. The forum was inaugurated by the president of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin.
Rito is the founder of the Rehoboth Reconcile Ignites Foundation (RRI), and chief executive officer (CEO) of Earthly by Rito & Co.
“I am a compassionate and versatile professional with strong cross-cultural communication skills, specialising in mobilising funds towards education, agriculture, sports, arts and culture. I am eager to build upon this foundation to contribute in social cohesion and community development while we improve the status of youth, women, and children globally. I have a professional interest in sustainable economic growth and social development,” says Rito.
She won the trip to Russia (all expenses paid) after she gave a business presentation at the South African Brics Youth Innovation Summit held on 28 March.
“I have always wanted to represent South Africa on an international platform, hence I was a finalist for Miss South Africa (Miss SA) 2018. Even though I studied Economics, never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would be at an international economic forum.
“It was a great honour and privilege to represent my country on this prestigious platform, where I was given an opportunity as a panellist to share more about our current economic plight in South Africa, the challenges of youth unemployment, and possible international collaborations that could assist to alleviate poverty. We must ensure that we as South Africans have clean water, sanitation, and affordable clean energy,” she says.
In her speech, Rito highlighted the importance of cultivating significance.
“Work ethos within the framework of youth perspectives is a complex task that requires a multi-faceted approach. Today’s rapidly changing world demands that young individuals not only possess the necessary skills and knowledge, but also understand the significance of their work and develop a strong work ethic,” she reiterates.
Rito says that by implementing various strategies and providing meaningful opportunities, the youth can be empowered to become engaged, responsible, and productive contributors to society.
“As a Brics Youth Ambassador my goal is to engage youths in meaningful projects, foster mentorship relationships, promote experiential learning through internships abroad and apprenticeship programmes.”
Through this programme Rito received the opportunity to visit important locations in St. Petersburg where she was able to network with leaders from all over the world.
