The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is Africa’s first Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbotWMM) candidate race.
If successful, it will join those of Boston, London, Tokyo, New York, Berlin and Chicago as the world’s most prestigious annual marathons, and the only such race in the southern hemisphere.
In addition to this marathon, Australia’s Sydney Marathon and China’s Chengdu Marathon are part of the AbbottWMM candidate process, with the winner to be announced in 2025.
The Cape Town Marathon was this year held on 14 and 15 October, and the main event on Sunday was won by Ethiopians Adane Kebede Gebre and Tsige Haileslase Abreha.
The gusty wind on the route slowed the men significantly, and Gebre only managed a completion time of 2:11. In the women’s event Abreha came close to the course record, but had to settle for the Olympic qualifying 2:24.
