Twenty runners from Welkom took part in the African Bank Soweto Marathon.
Dubbed “The People’s Race” this is no ordinary race, and it has a special place in the hearts of many South African runners.
“At this race people from all walks of life come together for the same cause, to run. This year’s 28th edition took place on Sunday, 5 November, and South African road runner Ntsindiso Mphakathi has become the first local man to win the Soweto Marathon in 12 years, with a time of 2:19.
“Irvette van Zyl took top honours in the women’s 42,2 km for the fourth time. Her time was 2:34,” says Nkhetheni Masupa, one of the Welkom runners.
The duo’s triumph in the challenging 42 km race was a major victory.
The Welkom runners’ presence was felt through the streets of Soweto, and they gave a sterling performance, says Masupa.
Their times are: Jacob Mothokoa (3:11), Mbangiso Malindi (3:37), Mabote Mokalodise (3:38), Nani Malakoane (3:41), Julius Lebabo (3:43), Hati Leseba (3:51), Morné Nel (4:14), Sthembizo Jwele (4:16), Telang Mohlabanyane (4:23), Mpai Moalahi (4:24), Potlako Sekokotane (4:27), Nthabiseng Tinte (4:33), Peter Mosobela (4:40), Ntombizodwa Daniza (4:40), Edward Sehale (4:41), Errence Motaung (4:45), Justice Shelile (4:54), Delekile Mmutlanyana (4:55), Meshack Lepele (5:38) and Mzondi Dhlamini (6:50).
The Harmony Striders who took part Sentle Mokholela, Juana Kok, Michelle van Dyk and Hendré van Dyk.
The Striders who took part in the 21,1 km are Matthews Mussimango, Charl de Coning, Daemane Makhate, Chadiba Mahasa, Pule Leepo, Abiel Faro, Refiloe Simango, Benedict Tsenoli, Welhelmina Morwa, Bernadette de Costa, Estelle Henrico, Antoinette Bothma, Tshediso Seitshiro and Puseletso Seitshiro.
The Striders who participated in the 42,2 km are Lebohang Lala, Riaan Harris, Morné Nel, Clayton Anderson, Muso Molefi, Potlako Sekokotana, Ntombizodwa Danisa, Justice Shelile, Meshack Lepele, Ishmael Dhlamini and Ncedo Mbobo.
