On spring day, Welkom’s long distance runner Nkhetheni Masupa was in Johannesburg partaking in the inaugural Jozi Ultra Marathon through the hills of Randburg.

The official distance for this event was 48 km.

“I registered for 48 km and then planned to run an extra 2 km to make it a clean 50 km. What a beautiful challenging route.

“Pity the poor marshals got it wrong somewhere, somehow, but I truly enjoyed the experience, clocking in 53 km at the end. I always say do more of what makes you happy, but with me it goes without saying; running is what makes me happy.”

Adding more fuel to his passion for endurance races, Masupa awaits the challenging annual Berlin Marathon later this month on 29 September in Germany.

Masupa has in addition registered for the Rand Water Vaal Marathon on 15 September, just two weeks before the 50th anniversary of the Berlin race.

Masupa was also invited to run the 2024 Abbott World Majors Marathon Age Group World Championships, taking place within the 2024 Sydney Marathon in Australia, on Sunday, 15 September.

This invitation is only extended to the top-ranked athletes around the world, from each age group.

“I would have loved to attend this event, but I failed to get enough funds to honour the invitation.

“I still have more marathons to do by December, and they include the Vaal Marathon on 15 September; the Berlin Marathon on 29 September; the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on 20 October; the Sani Stagger Marathon on 9 November; and the Rand Athletic Club (RAC) City Lodge Tough One on 24 November.”
