A woman was robbed of R124 300 whilst on her way to deposit money at the bank.

On Monday, 5 December, a 30-year-old woman, who is an employee at a bottle store in the Welkom CBD, alleged that she was on her way to the bank to deposit money when she heard a man calling her “sweety”.

When she looked back, an unknown man wearing a blue work suit overall with a face mask instructed her to hand over the handbag and threatened to shoot her.

“Apparently, she stood there frozen and shocked. Her male colleague was behind her and tried to rescue her by kicking the man in his stomach.

“The suspect fell on the tarred road and a Toyota Corolla stopped in front of him. He jumped inside and the driver drove off,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa police.

Thakeng says business people are warned not to send employees to the banks carrying a lot of money.

“They must rather drive with them or use the services of cash-in-transit security,” says Thakeng.

A case of robbery has been registered for further investigation. Anyone with information to trace these suspect must contact Capt. Yolanda Hulme of Welkom Serious and Violence Crimes on 082-493-1204, or the Crime Stop number on 08600-10111.
