Road safety this festive season a priority for Free State officials

Operation Festive Season has commenced in Lejweleputswa, with boots on the ground and police visibility prioritised in all the major towns and traffic destinations.

Police members, specialised units, the traffic department, and department of Home Affairs joined forces during operations in Allanridge, Boshof, Ventersburg, and Bothaville.

On 21 November, a roadblock was held on the R70 at the Hennenman-Virginia crossing. The unit members involved were the Ventersburg police, Public Order Policing (POP), the Welkom K9 unit with a patrol dog, and members of Home Affairs.

They searched 120 people and 68 vehicles. “Two road traffic-related fines were issued,” says Lt. Col Stephen Thakeng, spokesperson for the Lejweleputswa police.

Visible Policing members, detective services, and traffic department personnel manned the vehicle checkpoint that was held at Boshof. They searched 60 vehicles and 52 people, and issued five traffic-related fines.

In Allanridge, the police and provincial traffic department held a roadblock on the R30 road during which they searched 280 people and 174 vehicles. Sixteen traffic-related fines to the value of R5 200, were issued.

“These kind of roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints will be the order of the day and night during this festive season, to ensure that road users and law abiding citizens are and feel safe,” says Thakeng.
