The Gr. 1 learner of the Daluvuyo Primary School who was critically injured after a car struck him in Ndaki Road, Thabong, on 4 November has died.
The child was admitted to the Bongani Hospital in a critical condition.
The machines that were keeping him alive were switched off on Tuesday, 5 November.
Sohosethu Hlathi (7) is described by his mother, Weziwe Hlathe, as an intelligent child at school.
“He had an excellent memory and a very good level of concentration. Above all, he was a good child,” she says.
He is survived by his mother and father, Mojalefa Hlaole.
On Thursday Vistareported that this road had already claimed the life of a learner from the neighbouring Moremaphofu Primary School in 2023.
Two other learners of Daluvuyo were injured in 2023.
Desperate pleas from the Daluvuyo school to have the dangerous issues on this road addressed, have seemingly fallen on deaf ears.
A teacher at the school, Tebogo Modisenyane, told Vistathat speed bumps, signage, and a decent and official pedestrian crossing would assist both learners and motorists.
The spot where learners cross the road is near the Goldfields FET College’s Tosa campus and the old graveyard.
There is no curb, so these children have to walk in the road.
Large roadside bushes cause blind spots for motorists and pedestrians alike, and the large potholes cause vehicles to suddenly swerve, risking pedestrians being struck in the process.
Modisenyane says they have repeatedly reported this stretch of road to their councillor and the Matjhabeng Municipality.
