The Provincial Organised crime unit has cracked open the case involving the murder of Piet Moletsane

Three men have been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a former ward councillor in Meloding, Virginia, in 2021.

The Provincial Organised crime unit has cracked open the case involving the murder of Piet Moletsane, who was shot and killed when leaving the tavern he was working at.

Moletsane was active in politics and was a candidate ward councillor at the time he was murdered. The Provincial Organised Crime Unit was tasked to investigate the murder. 

A though investigation was conducted and leads were followed up which led to two arrests, a foreigner and South African, on 28 January. The investigation revealed that the 31 and 34 year old suspects were allegedly hired as hitmen. They have appeared several times in Virginia Magistrate Court and their case postponed till the 13 May.

The third suspect who is a former Councillor of Matjhabeng Municipality was arrested this week, and appeared in the Virginia Magistrate Court, today (04/05). The case of murder against Sephiri Jan Liphoko (44) has been postponed till the 13 May for bail application.

He remains in custody.

“He has been linked as allegedly being the mastermind in the murder that happened back in 2021,” says Brig. Motantsi Makhele, SAPS spokesperson.
